Roatan Spas – paradise in paradise

Roatan Spas – paradise in paradise

Roatan spas surprised me. I discovered some of the most luxurious, exotic treatments the Caribbean has to offer right here on the little island we like to call paradise. I mean this tiny island off the coast of Honduras is known for scuba diving, a laid back attitude and in recent years as a popular cruise ship stopover. It wasn’t until I overdid it on one of my day excursions that I entered a whole new world of paradise. Introducing the Roatan spa...

Call me a weekend warrior of sorts but when I try to go out and hit two Roatan dive sites, zip line through the jungle and dance it up later that night, my desk jockey body tends to say ouch! Rather than lay low for a few days to recover, I asked around where I might find a good massage. I ended up at Spa Baan Suerte...

While Baan Suerte offers both a 60 and 90 minute massage, I opted for the extended remix of 90 and the Deep Tissue method was just what I needed. Almost immediately I felt the stiffness loosen up, the pain ease and I got up from the table feeling rather invigorated.

This spa stuff had me curious so I chatted with the staff about other services they offer. Come to find out you can try aromatherapy or reflexology to also soothe aching muscles. Then they told me about the Mayan Stone Massage, one of their most popular massages where warm stones help melt your worries away. Well, okay, we’re on Roatan, so there’s not that many worries but still....

This Roatan spa also has body wraps like the Mayan Mud Wrap, Ocean Algae and Caribbean Breeze. Just some of the ingredients include coconut, sea salts, organic coffee and honey. While I hadn’t thought about that kind of thing too much, I thought my wife might be quite interested so got some more info on other spa services. Come to find out they do the whole range of treatments like mani and pedis, facials, nails, baths, waxing and face masks.

For more information about Spa Baan Suerte and other spa-related services, see the Spa and Wellness page.

Internet and Cell Phones on Roatan

on Tuesday, 07 August 2012. Posted in Tourism Roatan Blog

Staying connected while on a Roatan vacation is top of mind for many people and the system for getting on the internet and using a cell phone here is likely quite different than most of our visitors are used to. Here is a how to guide for getting connected while on Roatan.

Internet

Most people connect to the internet using USD mobile sticks. TIGO has a store in the MegaPlaza Mall and they can sell you the stick and sell you time with various options (weekly, monthly rates etc…). When you plug the stick into your laptop, you will be prompted to install and use the software to connect to the web. Sometime they can be finicky and dump you off the net but in general, you can get your connectivity needs met using these devices (email, Facebook, etc…).

Cell Phones

Roatan has VERY cheap rates for cell phone purchase and minutes so getting set up with one while you are here will not cost you a lot. I got a phone for $20.00 and bought $5.00 worth of talk time which lasted over a week for numerous short calls. Several companies compete for your business including TIGO, Claro and Digicel, some may have specials on when you arrive.

Getting the time activated on your phone I found to be a bit confusing the first time as the automated voice commands were in Spanish and I was forewarned if you punch in the wrong key you could lose all your time….basically, ask for help and somebody who does it regularly and burn through the process in less than a minute. I go to TIGO and they do the whole thing for me while I’m already getting my TIGO stick updated, time adding.

Roatan Hotels and Resorts

on Saturday, 16 June 2012. Posted in Tourism Roatan Blog

Roatan Hotels and Resorts

Roatan hotels and resorts can be found all over the island and there are some main tourism hotspots where there are plenty of choices both in terms of the number of properties to choose from as well as the type of accommodation experience you might be looking for. Here is a run down of popular places on Roatan where you can stay, play, relax and unwind.

Where to Stay

West End Village is a centre for diving, dining and nightly entertainment offering a great selection of accommodation styles. As one enters the main road of West End, properties heading to the right (north) offer a quieter, more laid back environment. Those wanting to be in the middle of all the action may wish to choose accommodation along the main road heading left (south). Evenings here can be very active with several restaurants and bars offering live music and the main strip busy with both foot and vehicular traffic.

West Bay is home to one of the Caribbean's best beaches, West Bay Beach. In the daytime, West Bay can be a flurry of activity, particularly on a day when cruise ships are visiting the island. But at night, West Bay turns into a small, quiet tropical hideaway. With a handful of beachfront and hillside accommodation, West Bay is ideal for families, honeymooners or those wanting to escape the masses and witness the perfect sunset. Choose from small scale modern resorts, beachfront and garden bungalows, vacation rental homes and luxury B&Bs. And if you do decide you want in on the action, West End's nightly dining and entertainment is just a 10-minute taxi ride away. (See our taxi fare guide page).

Sandy Bay's quiet, small community feel along with its close proximity to West End makes it a popular choice for accommodation with many Roatan visitors. There are a number of boutique resorts and vacation homes here along with an all-inclusive resort and some budget-type accommodation. Sandy bay is home to Anthony's Key Resort, the first Roatan resort and one of the largest dive operations in the world.

East Roatan is sought out by those wanting a less visited, off-the-beaten-path experience. Where the paved road ends, the serenity blooms and you may find you have entire stretches of beachfront, and miles of nature trails and coral reef to yourself. Resorts are small and intimate and you can expect personalized service that includes arranging small-group dive expeditions, Sunday afternoon barbeques and getting to know the locals that call this area home.

Mid-island accommodation includes the north side of Roatan from Mud Hole east to French Harbour and back along the south side, west toward Coxen Hole. Find solitude in remote parts of the north shore while being pampered at renowned resorts like Palmetto Bay Plantation. Try the brand new luxurious Pristine Bay Resort and its 18-hole golf course, just minutes from French Harbour. Rent out an entire cay for your wedding or special event at Barefoot Cay Resort, located just metres from one of the best wall dives on the island.

Roatan Weddings and Honeymoons - June 2012

on Tuesday, 29 May 2012. Posted in Tourism Roatan Blog

June is here and destination weddings to Roatan are as popular as ever. Roatan: what a destination it is. Surrounded by barrier reef and white sandy beaches, the island is the quintessential beachfront backdrop for tying the knot. Balmy Caribbean trade winds, swaying palm trees, turquoise waters; check (the proof is in the pics!). Private beaches, secluded resorts, cabanas on sandy cays; check. Lush tropical foliage, luxury accommodation, pool decks and outdoor restaurant seating; check. Wedding planners that take care of every detail; check.

Where to get married on Roatan - Here are just a few of our favourite places:

PBP-palapa-ceremonyPalmetto Bay Plantation – we love this place so much we’ve just recently blogged about the entire place. Located about a 45 minute drive from the airport, Palmetto is nestled into a hidden coastal tropical paradise complete with private beach and exceptionally designed/decorated Balinese-style beach villas. Impeccable service and highly experienced, the wedding photo gallery is jaw-dropping.PBP-beach

Keyhole Bay Resort - Walk down the “aisle” next to the infinity pool with incredible views of the Caribbean Sea.  Ample space for the ceremony and reception along with reasonable rates.  Keyhole can connect you with island photographers, rental companies, florists and all the folks you will need to contact for anything you might want or need. Minutes from West Bay Beach.PBP-bouquet

Barefoot Cay Resort – with no detail overlooked, a wedding at Barefoot Cay Resort is nothing shy of perfection. By hopping on board perhaps the shortest ferry ride in the world, you are taken to your own private Caribbean cay, complete with pool and eating area, a palapa-covered pier and just enough luxuriously furnished cabanas to accommodate your wedding party.
