Top 10 Things to do on Roatan

by Christian on Saturday, 12 March 2011.

Here is our latest favourite things to do list for Roatan. Whether you are looking for Roatan Shore Excursions while on a Caribbean cruise stopover or planning each dayy of your Roatan Vacation, here are some tried and true experiences that won't disappoint!

1_Zip-lining-gotsaga

1.       Zip over the jungle – take a Canopy Tour.
Zip lining has become one of the most popular land activities on the island of Roatan. And with no shortage of lush, mountainous terrain, it is no wonder there are six different canopy tours to choose from.  In fact, one operator offers the longest zip line in the Americas! Some have as many as 20 platforms and 13 suspension cables. If zipping at heights of 262 m (860 ft) and traversing more than 3 km (1.9 mi) of cable sounds like fun, Roatan zip lining is a must.

2.       Experience all-you-can-eat lobster tails and more at Hole-In-The-Wall Floating Restaurant. A long time favourite of visitors and locals alike, Hole-In-The-Wall offers a unique dining experience in the most unsuspecting location. Floatin2_Lobster-Tails-gotsagag on the edge of Jonesville Bight, this floating restaurant is accessible only by boat and passengers are delighted to find themselves traversing mangroves and spotting wildlife en route. While a regular lunch and dinner menu is offered daily, it is the Friday and Sunday all-you-can-eat BBQs that have put this tiny operation on the map. Imagine all the lobster tails and Prime Beef Filet you can eat...

3.       Snorkel off West Bay Beach.3_West-Bay-Beach-gotsaga
Just a few yards off one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean lay a colourful underwater world waiting to be explored by even the most beginner of snorkelers. The second largest barrier reef in the world terminates at Roatan’s doorstep and offers spectacular coral formations, seawalls and myriad sea life including sea turtles, sting rays, moray eels and dozens of colourful fish. West Bay is located on the leeward side of the island, protected from trade winds so waters are calm and ideal for beginners. Snorkel gear is readily available at various locations along the beach. Even better, support the Roatan Marine Park and rent directly from their office.

4.       Watch the sunset – tapas and live entertainment at TranquilSeas.
There are dozens of ideal spots on Roatan to watch the sun dip into the Caribbean Sea but perhaps nothing seems to feel more like paradise than from the deck of TranquilSeas Eco Lodge. 4_sunset-tranquilseas-gotsagaBuilt into the lush, natural topography, this boutique resort offers tapas and live entertainment on Tuesdays but any day of the week is perfect for sipping a glass of wine and letting the serenity consume you.

5.       Dance in the sand with locals – Barefeet Restaurant & Bar – Sundays.
If you are in West End on a Sunday night, it won’t take long to find out where it’s all going down. Barefeet Restaurant & Bar is hopping with both locals and visitors savouring the famous BBQ chicken menu and local bands like Jimmy & the Boys. 5_barefeet-restaurant--bar-g Aptly named, Barefeet has tables and chairs secured directly in the sand so leave the heels and home and prepare to let loose Caribbean style. Only steps from the beach, the cool ocean breezes offer relief to even the most diehard dancer.

6.       Find your voice on karaoke night at The Blue Marlin.
Maybe it’s the humid tropical air or perhaps the fact that you are thousands of miles from home but there is always a talented pool of amateurs hitting the mic at The Blue Marlin; an over-the-water lounge and restaurant. 6_blue-marlin-gotsaga No really; park the old perception of karaoke and just sit in for five minutes....you won’t want to leave and hey, if you try one or two Monkey La Las (see #9), you might even find yourself on stage!

7.       Get married – have an entire resort to yourself
Roatan is somewhat known for being one of lesser discovered Caribbean destinations and for weddings it is especially true. Imagine a wedding where you can have an entire cay/island to yourself; access to it is via a short ferry ride – you can at Barefoot Cay Resort, a place where every detail has been thought of. 7_palmetto-bay-plantation-wed Or choose a remote location and have the whole resort for you and your wedding party at Palmetto Bay Plantation. Luxurious Balinese-style cabanas surrounded by lush tropical foliage and steps from a private beach.

8.       Visit our tropical gardens – see our wildlife
Roatan is located in the tropics which means lots of greenery and exotic flora. Some of the island’s most interesting attractions include orchids, fruit and nut trees and flowering plants. 8_archs-iguana-farm-gotsaga And creatures inhabit these attractions too like the over 3000 iguanas at Arch’s Iguana Farm and the ever-playful monkeys at Monkey Business. You’ll definitely want a camera for this!

9.       Sip a Monkey La La.
Named after the odd-walking island iguana/lizard, the Monkey La La will, let’s say, leave an impression on you. 9-monkey-la-la-gotsaga A concoction of favourite island flavours, its sweet, its powerful and it’s a drink to be appreciated! Other favourite beverages on Roatan are Barena and Port Royal beers.

10.   Go diving - get PADI certified
Roatan is one of the least expensive places in the world to dive and get your scuba diving certification. There are a range of PADI dive courses and recreational dives to suit every taste and ability. Courses generally last three to four days with open water certification including two confined-water and two open-water dives. 10_diving-roatan-gotsaga But don’t let the laid back Caribbean lifestyle fool you – this diving mecca offers trained multi lingual dive masters, instructors and 5 star PADI-certified diving companies with all the latest equipment. Without exception all diving is done in the presence of PADI trained professional dive masters and/or instructors.

Roatan Golf - Pristine Bay Resort & Black Pearl Golf Course making headlines

by Christian on Monday, 24 January 2011.

The new 18-hole Black Pearl Golf Course and the surrounding resort, Pristine Bay is still putting Roatan golf on the map! It isn’t taking long for word to get out that golf is not only one of the newest Roatan land activities you can do while on the island, but award-winning course designer Peter Dye has created quite a stir in the golfing scene with what is being called one of the finest courses in the entire Caribbean.

Two recent articles feature Roatan golf

South Florida Golf Magazine has the following to say...

“Golfers of all skill levels will enjoy the par-72, 7,179-yard layout overlooking the shimmering Caribbean Sea. The course starts at the ocean’s doorstep and rises into the island’s rolling foothills before taking golfers on a wild ride back to the seaside clubhouse. It features one of Dye’s signature island greens, and 14 holes with unfettered views of the ocean and Meso-American Barrier Reef.

ExecDigital reports...

“Of all the holes that signify the Black Pearl Golf Course, the par-3 11-th hole could become the course’s signature. One thing the Dyes do very well is island greens. The 157-yard island green starts from an elevated tee with an amazing panoramic view of the sea where golfers hit shots to a green in the middle of a lake. The putting surface is surrounded by a narrow bunker – so missed shots have at least a chance to stay dry”.

Roatan Travel Tip #3: what to pack for a Roatan Holiday

by Christian on Saturday, 22 January 2011.

So now that you’ve made your Roatan travel plans, you’re probably doing what I do; pondering about what to pack. Roatan Island is an interesting place to pack for. In some cases, you’ll have just about every amenity you can think of when staying at the larger, full-service, all-inclusive resorts and if you forget something, just pick it up in the resort gift shop. In other cases, you’ll need to be a bit more independent if staying at a Roatan vacation home, picking up a car rental, buying your own groceries, designing your own itinerary etc...

Here are two packing lists – the first is for everyone regardless of the type of travel you intend to do on the island. The other is for those that will be fairly independent on their trip and may need to be somewhat more prepared.

For Every Roatan Traveller

Sunscreen – you are in the tropics! Doesn’t matter if you “brown naturally” at home – 30 SPF or higher, bring lots as you need to re-apply throughout the day (waterproof stuff if you plan on living in the water like I do!) **NB: don’t panic if you run out – plenty of places to purchase here on the island.

Bug spray – it’s lush, green and tropical – yup, we have mosquitoes at times so just come prepared. I spray myself before going out for the evening and seems to work really well. Small containers are great so you can take it with you and reapply if necessary.

Flashlight/batteries - mini LED flashlights are light and easy to pack. The island doesn’t have a ton of street lighting so sometimes you need a little extra light in the evenings. Also, the power can go off at times. I carry a mini Maglite in my pocket when I go out for the evening.

Alcohol-based wipes and cleansers – I find a combo of the bottled stuff and the single packets are the best since you can leave the bottle in your beach bag or handbag but stuff a single packet in your pocket if you don’t want to be carrying anything. These are particularly handy when you see a taco cart or make some kind of impulse food purchase.

Benadryl, Afterbite or similar itch cream – in case you forget to use bug spray or miss a spot or two. I found the coolest AfterBite dispenser – so small; almost the size of a pen that I carry with me in case I do get an itch. Fits in the pocket easily. You may not need it but bring it just in case.

Chargers - you’ve brought the camera, video camera, cell phone, computer, iPod and anything else you can cram into your suitcase – but do you have the chargers for it all?? Roatan uses the North American 2 and 3 prong receptacle formation so your plug-ins work normally if you are bringing electronics from the US and Canada.

Solid pair of sandals/flip-flops - it’s funny, you’ll probably bring several pairs of shoes and when you get here, you’ll soon find yourself wearing ONE pair – flip flops. Just make them fairly solid ones with some good cushioning – we have dirt roads, rough surfaces and lots of sand so you don’t want to find yourself with a broken flip flop in the middle of your day trip! Sandals that strap on and are waterproof are ideal. Yes you can buy them here but you’ll want them as soon as you disembark the plane and hit the tropical climate!

Mini first aid kit – just the basics should cover you as there are plenty of clinics to rely on if you have anything serious. Band-aids, Polysporin or similar anti-bacterial cream can take care of most little nics and scrapes. I recently discovered the Polysporin spray on to-go dispenser – very light, small and easier to apply than the tube stuff (hands never touch it).

Sunglasses – make sure they have UV protection – the sun is strong on your eyes and squinting in all your photos is, well, yucky.

Nice-to-haves on your trip

Spanish phrase book – well, you can definitely get by without one since English is the official language but I have used my mini pocket phrase book on many occasion if nothing more than just to be polite and show courtesy to the Spanish-speaking locals. Some taxi cab drivers speak limited English so it is nice to be able to ask prices and know your Spanish numbers/fares etc... I picked a phrase book up for under $10USD at an airport bookstore.

For Fully Independent Travellers

In addition to the above, here are some items you might find very handy to have when you are designing your own vacation on the island.

Backpack/day bag – throw it all in one bag for the day or you are probably going to lose something! I bring a light, collapsible backpack that takes hardly any space in my luggage. If I buy too much (again), I can use that as a carryon on the way back.

Sealable plastic bags - these have come in so very handy when I’ve stayed in vacation rentals/condos. A mix of snack-sized, lunch sandwich-sized and large freezer bag-size bags can house everything from opened food, protecting sunscreen in your bag (in case it leaks), waterproofing a small amount of cash you put in your swimsuit pocket or keeping electronics dry, sand-free. I portion out all my vitamins, protein powder etc... into small bags so I am carrying just enough to cover my time there. Saves me space and weight in my bags. NB* I never take my camera to the beach without putting it in a plastic bag first, then in my backpack.

Small ice pack and soft sided cooler bag – not only helps you keep food cold that you take from your condo on a day trip but can help you protect food you pick up at the grocery store. Remember, it’s hot here so doesn’t take long for cold things to get very warm once they leave the air-conditioned store.

Protein bars or meal supplement bars (non-chocolate/melting type) – you may not need them but I always carry one in my backpack/day bag in case I am on an excursion or away from a place that serves food for any length of time. I found Clif Bars provide a lot of energy and don’t melt but there are several alternatives out there. How many to bring? I pack and allow for 1 bar for every two days of my trip.

Splenda or your sweetener of choice – similar to the energy bars, I allow for about 1-2 packets for each day I am on the island. They do have a generic sweetener at most restaurants so if you’re not fussy you may find that works for you. Some people are just kind of particular about the tastes and I haven’t found any Splenda on the island so far.

I hope this helps you get your packing started! Check the Roatan FAQ page for other information about what to expect on your Roatan vacation.
